The Ancient City Anemurium

Anemurium, a part of the Commagene Kingdom, which began to develop in the 1st century BC, was also built by King IV. Coins of Antiochus are known to be minted. The walls surrounding the city were built during this period. The ancient city is surrounded by zigzag fortifications and the settlement within the fort is divided into two by a wall that descends from the hill.

Due to its proximity to Cyprus, Anemurium, which was an intermediate station during the Roman period, was connected by road to Germaniopolis, one of the important Roman cities. It became an important trading city in which natural resources were exported. The important structures of the city that survived at this time are also from this period. This bright period of the city It came to an end in 260 with the Persian armies. Anemurium was later acquired by the Isaurians in the 5th century. The city gained prosperity during the Isaurian Zenon period, which lasted until the 6th century. Along with the churches of this period, there are two remains of small baths. The city, which was subjected to Arab raids in the 7th century, was completely abandoned after this date.

While the blue limestone of the region was used in the construction of 1.5 km long city walls, white stone was used in the observation towers of the Hellenistic Period. To the north of the Odeon, there are no traces of the slope-based seats of the theater, but some of the surrounding walls are visible. It has two entrances. The entrances are supported by arches and vaults. Opposite the theater, the odeon has a rectangular plan and two entrances. Semicircular seats are approximately 900 seats. The doors under the seating groups provide access to the vaulted and mosaic corridor. This corridor is connected to the orchestra. Building İ.S. It is dated to the 2nd century. The public bath is located to the west of the theater. It is the largest bath structure in the ruins and has two floors. There are three heating halls and two swimming pools. While the vaulted spaces are located on the lower floor, horizontal blown water distribution systems can be seen in the building. Very few remains of the floor mosaic decorated with geometric patterns. There is a second bath between the necropolis area and the sea. This hammam consists of three areas. Mosaics are found indoors and at the base of the front area. Gymnasion is located southwest of the odeon. The whole floor is covered with mosaics decorated with geometric patterns. It is 100 meters long and is surrounded by stoas on three sides and covers an area of ​​about 1000 square meters.

To the north of the city, there are aqueducts built in two rows in east-west direction. The top row of these was built in a more simple style. The necropolis area of ​​the Anemurium archaeological site is one of the best preserved areas such as Elaiussa-Sebaste. There are approximately 350 graves.
